General Soulwire Questions

What is Soulwire all about?

Soulwire is a concept that started almost 10 years ago but was never brought together until 2005. If you read the description of Weave the Soul (on Rewriting Destiny), it is summed up: "A flexible, unbreakable wire coils with the movement of every thought and weaves the tapestry of our soul. Weave the Soul parallels the concept of Soulwire, which is the process in which we weave the strands of our experiences and feelings to construct the perception of ourselves and the world around us."

These songs are snapshots to the events that occur in our lives. The music is not enclosed to one particular area, but open to all things, the times of laughter, sadness, peace, anger, betrayal, unity, understanding, despair etc. Because of the wide scope, the songs may have great variety and each one with a unique personality.

Soulwire Bio...

"If you are a fan of New Age music and a follower of independent music then there is a good chance you are familiar with the music of Torchlight Creek founder and composer Ken Hill."
- NAIRA (North-American Academy of Independent Recording Artists)

Over the last 10 years, Ken Hill had been searching for the right blend of his favorite genres of electronic, new age and rock music.  He began to learn guitar and composition on his computer in 1994, at the age of 16.  Electronically inspired by the instrumentals of Nine Inch Nails and Final Fantasy composer, Nobuo Uetmatsu, he merged the heavy electronic and softer orchestral melodies with rock inspired guitar riffs.  After studying classical music at a university for 3 years, he traded the electric guitar for the classical and acoustic.

In 2002, Ken started  Torchlight Creek, a project where he composed new age melodies and classical guitar lines with an accompanying flutist.  The debut album won online prestigious awards such as Song of the Month and Hall of Fame (9.8 out of 10) for Gods of Music, a music critiquing site.

After various rock bands and side projects, Ken still wanted to find a way to fuse together the downtempo electronic and melancholic softer style of his music.  It was then that he created Soulwire, using the different elements of his music to express the twists and turns of life. He integrated this with his philosophical thoughts and questions as a lyric for the mind to muse upon, as the music weaves the tale and guides the listener through.

What's next?

With the upgrade of my studio complete, I am going to begin to work hard on my next album.  Although Rewriting Destiny was a musical autobiography, I'm going to venture into a different artistic direction because the story of finding purpose has been told so it is not necessary to continue where the last album left off.

As you may have heard, A Radiant Nothing is the title of the new album.  I have 10 songs completed, and anticipate the completion with about 4 more tracks.  Don't be suprised if you noticed variances in style with each succeeding album, because I am composing every new album with a central concept in mind.  Whatever that concept is will dictate the nature of the songs within.

This new album steps up into a new level from Rewriting Destiny in many ways, especially with the upgrade in equipment (it will sound cleaner, higher quality).  Being my fourth completed album ("Touch of Fate", "Two Moons", "Rewriting Destiny"),  I believe I have finally captured my artistic style with more confidence than ever before.  I had no idea the type of response I would get with Rewriting Destiny, and all those amazing responses in the favorite comments section led me to believe that others found something in that vision as well.  It was truly humbling to receive some of the responses I reposted in there.

What are your influences?

As a teenager, Alice in Chains, Nine Inch Nails, Stabbing Westward, James Horner and Nobuo Uematsu were some of my favorite artists. My tastes have widened and a few more artists I enjoy are Coldplay, Muse, Aphex Twin, The Fray, Aqualung, James Blunt, Kin Za Za, Andy Orozco, it goes on and on.

I love innovative music that has a certain raw, honest expression. I'm not much into songs that use typical cliches, or feels like a half hearted duplication of the latest musical fad. My interpretations are subjective of course, but I feel there is a large amount of imitative mainstream music that safely follows the latest trends, created strategically to make money and not necessarily be artistic. I appreciate innovative artists that bend the envelope.

Any other members?  Are you up for collaboration?

No, there are no other members.  Rewriting Destiny was a journal that chronicled my life, I knew that this album would have to be done on my own because of that.  I've had quite a few offers from vocalists about collaborating, and it is a possibility but my main focus is to keep write music that comes straight from within so I am likely to stay a solo artist.

What instruments do you play?

Main instrument is the acoustic guitar (and computer if you consider that an instrument). Secondary instruments are piano, native american flute, and various other woodwinds.

Rewriting Destiny Questions

Why did you call the album Rewriting Destiny?

I went through a phase that was emotionally difficult, and music was my only expression through some of those times.  Sometimes words can't express the depth of feeling like a song, and when I ran out of words to type up in my journal, I would turn to music instead.

Rewriting Destiny is very much like a musical journal, an autobiography of a chapter that I went through in my life - most of the songs were written as I was going through those changes and emotions.  It is an honest album in that sense, I was writing how I felt at that moment.  I did not know how it would end up, to be honest.  Rewriting Destiny is about finding strength and purpose in life, watching it shatter, and through picking up the pieces, understanding and finding freedom.

What are some of the hidden meanings?

Rewriting Destiny carries a lot of depth to those who look for it.  There are many symbols throughout the album to decipher.  :)  At first, I thought I would leave it a secret, but I think I will slowly begin to release some of the symbols that I used in time, in the FAQ.  I give a few away in my interview with my very first interview with Mystic Soundscapes radio (which will be available late August).

1. "Lous Eht Evaew" is Weave the Soul backwards.  It is the perfect finality to the album...a realization about what Seth has taught me about life.  If "Weave the Soul" is a construction of the world around us, then "Lous Eht Evaew" is the opposite.  It is the deconstruction of our experiences, hurts, pains, struggles until we are back to innocence.  It's about letting go and taking it by the moment.  That is something that Seth taught me.  Another thing that is interesting about this song is that the melody line is taken straight from "Weave the Soul".  The entire melody is played in reverse (except the piano which was reversed again and synchronized with the backwards melody) and then a guitar melody and a short conversation with Seth was added on.

2. "When the Last Leaf Falls" is the pivotal point of the entire album.  That is also the picture behind the CD.  It's explained in the upcoming interview.  I'll give you a major clue, the seeds that grew are all the songs before it.

3. "The Dawning of Symmetry" is when harmony began to align for myself.  If you listen closely, the very first introduction of the guitar is ever so slightly off beat, but as soon as the drumline comes in, the the guitar syncs in harmony with the melody.  It was deliberate to reflect the mood of the song, things were finally snapping into place.

4. "Echoes of a Fallen Dream" The string section represents the dream that has fallen.  That is why it comes in waves and disappears as quickly as it began, it is unreachable.  The piano melody is the person, replaying the same scene over and over again.  For a moment, the strings get intense, becomes almost overwhelmingly loud and then the piano melody comes back in and the strings sink back into the background.  That is the dream that keeps reaching out.  The native american flute represents something as well.  :) I'll leave that to you to think about...

5.  There's more...that's all for now...if you think you know of one, feel free to post a comment or send a message.

Whats your favorite song?

I am partial to all of them.  I really am. :)  Right now, with the new tracks included, my favorite 3 songs are : Transition to Eternity, A Radiant Nothing and Collapsing Eclipse...but these things change on a daily basis.

Why is the album split in half?

The songs on Rewriting Destiny were chosen in a specific order to tell the story of the last 2 years of my life.  It just happened that it went in phases, and so most of the songs in the first section are more upbeat and the second section are melancholic (the exceptions are Sleeping Angel and Shimmering Wings from Sorrow).

Who did the artwork, mixing, music?

I did all of it.  I am lucky enough to have delved a little bit in graphic arts as well as music, and I felt since I am writing my own words and melodies, that I would like to keep the vibe the same by doing all the artwork as well.

For the next album, I am using other artists.  I am very excited to unveil what it is going to look like...but that will happen in due time.
